Product Guide Specification

Specifier Notes:  This product guide specification is written according to the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) Format, including MasterFormat, SectionFormat, and PageFormat, contained in the CSI Manual of Practice. 

The section must be carefully reviewed and edited by the Architect to meet the requirements of the project and local building code.  Coordinate this section with other specification sections and the drawings. Delete all "Specifier Notes" when editing this section.


SECTION 03100

ROUND CONCRETE COLUMN FORMS

Specifier Notes:  This section covers “Caraustar KlimatePRO/easy-POUR” forms, “Caraustar Fancy Forms”, “Caraustar Void Forms”, and “Caraustar Recess Ring Forms” for forming cast-in-place concrete columns.  Consult Caraustar for assistance in editing this section for the specific application.


PART 1  GENERAL

1.1  SECTION INCLUDES

 A. Round cast-in-place concrete column forms.

1.2  RELATED SECTIONS

Specifier Notes:  Edit the following list as required for the project.  List other sections with work

directly related to the column forms.

 A. Section 03300 - Cast-in-Place Concrete.

1.3  REFERENCES

Specifier Notes:  List standards referenced in this section, complete with designations and titles.  This

article does not require compliance with standards, but is merely a listing of those used.

 A. ACI 301 - Standard Specification for Structural Concrete.

1.4  SUBMITTALS

 A. Comply with Section 01330 - Submittal Procedures.

 B. Product Data:  Submit manufacturer's product data, including installation instructions.

1.5  QUALITY ASSURANCE

 A. Column Formwork and Form Accessories:  ACI 301, unless otherwise specified.

1.6  DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

 A. Delivery:  Deliver materials to site in manufacturer's original, unopened containers and

  packaging, with labels clearly identifying product name and manufacturer.

 B. Storage:

 1. Store materials in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.
 2. Store forms a minimum of 4 inches above ground in a clean dry area.
 3. Protect forms from rain, snow, and moisture.
 4. Cover ends of tube to keep out rain, snow, and moisture and to allow for ventilation.
 5. Store forms in vertical position.

 C. Handling: Protect materials during handling and installation to prevent damage.


PART 2  PRODUCTS

2.1  MANUFACTURER

2.2  ROUND CONCRETE COLUMN FORMS

Specifier Notes:  Specify required column forms.  Delete forms not required.  Consult Caraustar for assistance in specifying column forms for the specific application and for availability of custom forms.

A. Concrete Column Forms:  Caraustar KlimatePRO/easy-POUR forms.

 1. Description:  Spirally wound layers of 100% Recycled Paperboard and adhesive to form paper    tubes.
 2. Interior Surface:  Polyethylene laminated to paper that acts as a moisture barrier while placing concrete and as a release agent to aid in removing form after concrete has set.
 3. Exterior Surface:  Specialized paper to shed moisture during normal handling of form.
 4. Form Body:  100% Recycled Paperboard.
 5. Wall Thickness:  Dependent on form diameter and height of finished column.
 a. KlimatePRO/easy-POUR: Columns up to 12’ in height
 b. KlimatePRO/easy-POUR PLUS:  Columns up to 20’ in height 
 c.  For columns which exceed 20’ in height, consult Caraustar
 6. Column Size:  As indicated on the drawings.

 B. Lined Forms:  Caraustar Smooth Forms.


 1. Description:  Spirally wound layers of paperboard and adhesive to form paper tubes.
 2. Interior Surface:  High impact plastic sheet applied to paper to eliminate appearance of spiral lines and impart smooth, uniform texture to concrete.
 3. Exterior Surface:  Specialized paper to shed moisture during normal handling of form.
 4. Form Body:  100% Recycled Paperboard.
 5. Column Size:  As indicated on the drawings.

 C. Concrete Void Forms:  Caraustar Concrete Void Forms.


 1. Description:  Spirally wound layers of paperboard and adhesive to form paper tubes.
 2. Exterior Surface:  Treated to retard absorption of moisture while placing concrete.
 3. Form Body:  100% Recycled Paperboard with an additional laminated moisture barrier ply.
 4. Void Size:  As indicated on the drawings.

 D. Concrete Column Recess Ring Forms:  Caraustar Recess Ring Forms.


 1. Description:  Convolutely wound layers of paperboard and adhesive to form paper tubes to fit inside round forms to create a reveal.
 2. Interior Surface:  Treated to resist moisture absorption
 3. Exterior Surface: Treated to resist moisture absorption 
 3. Form Body:  100% Recycled Paperboard.
 4. Reveal Size:  As indicated on the drawings.


PART 3  EXECUTION

3.1  EXAMINATION

 A. Examine locations to receive column forms.  Notify Architect if locations are not acceptable.  Do not begin installation until unacceptable conditions have been corrected.

3.2  INSTALLATION

 A. Install column forms in accordance with manufacturer's instructions at locations and to elevations as indicated on the drawings.

 B. Install column forms plumb with clearance to reinforcing steel as indicated on the drawings.

 C. Securely brace and anchor column forms at top, bottom, and along height as necessary.

 D. Do not use column forms that are out-of-round, damaged, or contain defects that will impair concrete surface texture.

 E. Do not allow column reinforcing steel to damage interior form coating.

 F. Do not allow moisture to damage forms before concrete is placed.

 G. Do not place concrete if any part of form is wet.

 H. Install column forms with manufacturer’s installation hardware.

3.3  PLACING, FINISHING, AND CURING

 A. Placing, Finishing, and Curing Concrete:  As specified in Section 03300.

3.4  REMOVAL

 A. Remove column forms as soon as removal operations will not damage concrete, with a minimum of 24 hours after placing concrete.

 B. Prevent damage to concrete from form removal.
